First Quad Amputee to get a PPL?

Adams Aviation and The Flying Shop are proud to be sponsoring Ray Edwards in his attempt to gain a PPL.

Nothing unusual in a 54 year old man wanting to learn to fly, except Ray is no ordinary man. In 1980 Ray was told he had Hodgkin's disease (Cancer of the Lymph Glands), a programme of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy beat the disease but in 1987 he contracted Septicaemia which led to him having both legs amputated below the knee, one arm amputated through the elbow and the other 100mm below the elbow. As if that wasn't enough to cope with Ray's kidneys failed and then in 2005 he had a heart attack.

Most people would sit at home feeling sorry for themselves but it couldn't be more different with Ray, he is married with two lovely daughters, formed Access Consultants, a company modifying and adapting homes for amputees, and he currently Acting Chief Executive of the Limbless Association, a charity helping and advising amputees. To keep himself fit Ray swims, trampolines and has started to learn to ski.

In November 2007 Ray was awarded "The Douglas Bader Inspiration Award.

Ray's determination to promote the Limbless Association led him to look for another challenge, so what better than learning to fly?, he's passed the CAA medical and had a trial lesson. It is believed that Ray could be the first quad amputee to gain a PPL.
